In a globalised world, armed conflicts affect much more than politics or the economy: they also reshape civil aviation. Airspace closures, longer routes and rising operating costs are now part of the current aviation landscape. The war in Europe, triggered by the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, is a clear example of how a conflict can change the way the world flies.
(At Europair we have already analysed in depth the impact of the closure of Ukraine’s airspace in a previous blog)
When conflict breaks out, one of the first measures is to close the affected airspace. Airlines must redesign thousands of routes, increasing flight time, fuel consumption and operational costs. Since the start of the war in Europe, many carriers have had to avoid Russian and Ukrainian airspace, resulting in diversions that can add up to 90 extra minutes on some Europe–Asia journeys.
Conflicts raise operational safety risks. Military systems, radar interference or drones near civil routes force organisations such as ICAO and Eurocontrol to strengthen alerts and flight protocols. Insurers also raise war-risk premiums, which increases the cost base for airlines and can be reflected in ticket prices.
Eurocontrol estimated that after the invasion of Ukraine more than 10,000 flights were rerouted weekly, with an average 20% rise in operating costs on affected routes. The result: loss of international connectivity, longer journey times and lower overall network efficiency. Many airlines adjusted schedules, reduced frequencies or temporarily suspended routes to Asia and the Middle East.
In unstable contexts, private aviation becomes a key option. Companies, governments and organisations use charter flights and private jets for evacuations, humanitarian missions or urgent travel. Private operations offer operational flexibility, bespoke routing and access to alternative airports away from conflict zones, helping maintain continuity when scheduled services are disrupted.
At Europair we constantly monitor geopolitical developments in Europe and worldwide. We work with certified operators and apply high safety standards to provide fast, secure and efficient air solutions even in complex environments. Our goal is for clients to keep flying with confidence, even when airspace becomes uncertain.
From Europair we are at your service to bring you closer to the world of private aviation and charter flights, we will advise you throughout the process, answer all your questions, and find the best type of aircraft according to your needs.
