With the arrival of what looks to be a promising summer season for our industry, we have received several warnings about the complex operational challenges that airports and ground handlers will face as we enter the summer travel season.

In a joint statement, Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE (Airports Council International), and Fabio Gamba, Director General of ASA (Airport Services Association), began by welcoming the resumption of air travel after the devastating effects of the pandemic on their respective sectors. However, the recovery is progressing with higher traffic peaks. Indeed, at many airports, and in particular the larger hubs, traffic peaks are at or above pre-pandemic levels.  

Coping with this sudden increase and concentration of air traffic has been a challenge for airports and their operational partners, especially ground handling services.

This situation has increased flight delays and cancellations, resulting in a degraded passenger experience at many airports, as key processes such as check-in, security checks and baggage drop-off involve much longer waiting times. In fact, a recently completed ACI EUROPE survey reveals that among European airports:

- 66% expect flight delays to increase 

- 16% expect flight cancellations to increase 

- 15% expect flight schedules to be adjusted 

- 35% expect airport and ground staffing shortages to affect their operations beyond the summer season.  

While each airport is unique, and the extent of these disruptions varies significantly, we wanted to inform you of the possibility of these unfortunate inconveniences during this summer season, as we have unfortunately already experienced on occasion.
