The Future of Green Hydrogen Aviation in Spain: a Potential Hub in Development

Madrid Barajas EUROPAIR (2).png

Green hydrogen is becoming increasingly important as a key part of the ecological transition and the development of a sustainable fuel for aviation. Spain, thanks to its potential in renewable energy, could host one of the world's first green hydrogen aviation hubs. Six leading companies in the sector, including Airbus, Aena, Air Nostrum, Iberia, Exolum, and Repsol, have joined forces to investigate and develop this innovative project, which has the potential to transform both aviation and airport management in the country.

A Collaborative Effort for Aviation Sustainability

Green hydrogen is emerging as the most promising solution to decarbonise aviation. The recent alliance between these six companies aims to create an airport hub that integrates this technology throughout the value chain, from hydrogen production to ground operations at airports.

According to Javier Arnaldo, Sustainability Director of Airbus Spain, collaboration between companies in the sector is "essential to ensure the future supply of hydrogen at airports". He believes that Spain’s great potential in renewable energy positions it as a prime location to lead the development of hydrogen-powered aviation.

María José Sanz, Director of Quality and Environment at Air Nostrum, highlighted the airline’s ability to be the first to adopt hydrogen, due to its regional nature. This pioneering approach could be key to accelerating the implementation of this technology on short-haul flights, marking a milestone in the use of sustainable fuels.

Challenges and Opportunities ahead

The road to creating this green hydrogen hub is not without its challenges. Beatriz González, Sustainability Director of Aena, highlighted that the collaboration will provide a "broader understanding of how the hydrogen supply process to Spanish airports could materialise in the future". Aena is already working on a roadmap to overcome the challenges posed by introducing hydrogen in airport operations.

Moreover, Andrés Suárez, Global Strategy and Innovation Lead at Exolum, emphasised the company’s commitment to developing the necessary infrastructure to deploy hydrogen as a sustainable solution for the aviation sector, thus supporting the energy transition.

Long-term Benefits of Green Hydrogen Aviation

In the long term, green hydrogen could not only revolutionise aviation sustainability, but also boost the sector’s competitiveness. By significantly reducing emissions, airlines could avoid future carbon taxes, making flights more profitable and affordable for passengers. Additionally, the development of a hydrogen hub in Spain could create jobs in the design, construction, and operation of infrastructure, supporting the growth of the green economy.

Hydrogen will also serve as a clean fuel for aircraft and could be integrated into other sectors of transport and mobility, further diversifying the economic ecosystem around the ecological transition.

A step towards Sustainable Airports

Spain has a unique opportunity to lead the creation of a network of sustainable airports, where green hydrogen plays a crucial role, not only in aircraft but also in ground operations. Luis de Oyarzabal, Senior Manager of New Business at Repsol, commented that hydrogen "will play a crucial role in decarbonisation", both in the industrial and mobility sectors.

The development of this hub could mark the beginning of a new era for aviation in Spain, driving the use of sustainable fuels and contributing decisively to the global ecological transition.
